CLEANING HARD CONTACT LENSES
After removing the lens from the eye, rinse it with cool tap water to flush away any loose debris. Place a few drops of cleaning solution on both lens surfaces and “massage” the lens between the thumb and forefinger or in the palm of the hand. The cleaning solution removes any residues or deposits that may have collected on the surface of the lens. Rinse the lens again with cool tap water and place it concave side up in its clean carrying case, which you have filled with soaking solution. The carrying case should be kept immaculate. Clean it every day with hot water.
In case you’re wondering whether all that daily rubbing can wear out or warp and flatten your lenses—tests have proven that it doesn’t. So although there are other cleaning devices that employ ultrasound waves, hydraulic pumping, and forceful sprays, you don’t need them.
Some patients have resorted to using baby shampoo or liquid detergent as a cleaning solution. This is not a good idea since both these products contain alcohol. Alcohol has been shown to damage the surface of some contact lenses, causing mucus to adhere and produce blurry vision and, in some cases, a shattered lens.
STORING HARD CONTACT LENSES
Although hard lenses are made of hydrophobic plastic and won’t “dry out” the way soft lenses would, I recommend that you store them in a soaking solution whenever you’re not wearing them. This solution, which is mildly germicidal, keeps your lenses moist and free of bacteria and deposits. Make sure you replace last night’s soaking solution with fresh solution every day. Don’t try to get away with using tap water as a soaking solution. Many of the secretions from your eyes that remain deposited on your lens can combine with the minerals in tap water, and once that happens, the deposits are very hard to remove. Besides, tap water isn’t sterile and won’t help keep your lenses sterile either.
