INSERTING HARD CONTACT LENSES
There are several methods used to insert contact lenses. Some people use their dominant hand to insert the lenses. Others use the right hand for the right lens and the left hand for the left lens. Only practice and your doctor’s advice will dictate which method is best for you.
No matter which method is used, the novice must overcome two natural reflexes while learning to insert a lens: Looking away from the lens and closing the eyelids as the lens is inserted. To remove a lens from the case, moisten your finger with wetting solution; touch it to the contact lens surface and the lens will adhere. After removal rinse the lens with cool tap water. Apply a few drops of wetting solution and massage it on the lens between index finger and thumb.
Rinse the lens again with cool tap water, inspect it to be certain that it is free of particles, reapply the wetting solution, and it’s ready to be inserted using one of the methods described below. The methods describe the procedure for the right eye; simply reverse directions for the left eye.
After insertion blink several times to help the lens “settle” into place on the cornea. (NOTE: Looking into a mirror during insertion at first will help, but eventually you should learn to do without the mirror.)
METHOD # 1
- Place the contact lens with the concave (hollow) side up on the tip of the index finger of the right hand.
- With the index finger of the left hand, raise the upper lid at its margin (base of eyelashes).
- With the middle finger of the right hand, pull down the lower lid at its margin.
- Fixate the vision of your right eye or look “through” the lens at all times.
- Slowly and steadily bring your finger with the lens on it toward your eye and place the lens on the cornea.
- Gently release the lower eyelid, then the upper eyelid.
METHOD #2
Same as Method #1 except that:
- Place the lens on the tip of the middle finger of the right hand.
- Pull the lower lid down with the fourth (ring) finger of the right hand.
METHOD #3
- Use only the right hand.
- Place the lens on the tip of the middle finger.
- Hold up the upper lid with the index finger. 3. Use your thumb to pull down the lower lid.
METHOD #4
Again, only the right hand is used.
- Raise the upper lid voluntarily, without help from a finger.
- Place the contact lens on the tip of the index finger.
- Pull the lower lid down with the middle finger.
METHOD #5
Same as Method # 1 except that:
- Place the left hand over the head.
- Use the middle finger of the left hand to hold up the upper lid.
